STAR is dead. Long live CAR.
The STAR method trains you to spend 40 seconds on setup before you say anything interesting. A tighter frame gets you to the point.
If you've prepared for an interview in the last decade, you've met STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result. It's not wrong. But watch people actually use it and you'll notice the same problem — they spend most of the answer on Situation and Task, describing context nobody asked about, and run out of energy exactly when they reach the part that matters.
The problem with STAR
STAR has four beats, and two of them are throat-clearing. By the time you finish setting the scene, the interviewer has been listening for forty seconds without hearing a single thing you did. In a 30-minute interview with six questions, that's time you cannot afford to spend.
The CAR frame
CAR keeps what works and cuts what doesn't: Context, Action, Result. One sentence of context, the bulk on your action, and a clear result to land on.
- Context: one sentence. Where you were and what was at stake.
- Action: the heart of it. What you specifically did — decisions, trade-offs, the part only you could tell.
- Result: the payoff. What changed, ideally with a number and a lesson.
The same story, both ways
STAR: “So, our team was launching a new app. We had a deadline in Q3. My task was to coordinate testing. I organized a schedule and assigned testers and tracked bugs and… we launched on time.” Forty seconds, mostly setup.
CAR: “Our app launch was three weeks from deadline with 200 open bugs (context). I triaged them into must-fix and later, pulled two engineers onto the critical ones, and ran a daily 15-minute standup to keep it visible (action). We shipped on time with zero critical bugs, and we've used that triage system for every release since (result).”
Interviewers don't remember your situation. They remember what you did and what it changed.
How to practise it
Take five stories you expect to tell — a success, a conflict, a failure, a leadership moment, a technical challenge. Write each as one line of context, three of action, one of result. Say them out loud until the shape is muscle memory, not a script. The goal isn't to recite; it's to always know where the point is and reach it fast.
STAR taught a generation to be thorough. CAR teaches you to be memorable. In a room where the interviewer will forget most of what they hear by evening, memorable wins.
